Career Competencies
WHAT IS CAREER READINESS?
The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) defines career readiness as a set of core competencies that prepare students for workplace success and lifelong career growth—the “new career currency.” These competencies reflect the skills, abilities, and behaviors employers consistently value across industries.
At Providence College, these competencies guide the integration of academic, career, and extracurricular experiences with career outcomes across all majors.
The Chirico Career Center helps students recognize, communicate, and strengthen these skills through personalized coaching, experiential learning, employer engagement, leadership development, and hands-on programs—preparing them for life after PC. Below are the competencies and the programs that help Friars build them.

CAREER & SELF-DEVELOPMENT

Ways to gain competencies: Meet with a Career Coach to discuss CliftonStrengths and Focus2 assessment results and develop a career plan. Leverage the Friar Network to learn more about careers and how to prepare for the future.

IMPORTANCE VS. PROFICIENCY
NACE’s 2026 Job Outlook report found more than 40% of employers believe new graduates’ skills align closely with their needs, while communication, professionalism and critical thinking remain areas for improvement.
